In the last few weeks I have been talking to many world class athletes and coaches about tracking and journaling. Often the athlete or coach would say to me “Nah I don’t journal but I track all my workouts”.
I found this curious as to me tracking and journaling are the same not disperate.
I explored more into this to see if it was a recurring theme so I did some research into the benefits athletes and coaches get from tracking workouts.
Here are some of the benefits:
- Allows to see progress over time
- Increases efficiency with time in gym
- Lends accountibility to yourself and your goals
- Allows for easier modifications and shows when and where changes need to be made
- Helps drive focus and direction of your programming
- Motivates and reinforces why you are doing what you are
- Helps coaches see how your improving, what you are responding to best and to identify training problems
All these benefits with the possible exception of helping coaches are the same benefits someone derives from journaling.
It’s peculiar then that these groups separate these activities, maybe is that athletes and coaches think of themselves as people that track but not journal. Maybe it’s this labelling bias, maybe it’s something else but these activities are not so different in there process and benefits.
